Tony Finau Gets His 6th PGA Tour Victory at The Mexico Open
Tony Finau won the Mexico Open at Vidanta in fashion this weekend. Running away with it on Sunday to win by 3 strokes and carding a final round 66. Nobody really got close to him today, but he made some great recovery shots to keep the lead the entire day and get what looked like a "comfortable victory". Of course, Tony remained in the zone the entire day and in his victory presser, he said he didn't feel like he had the win locked up until hitting the green on the last hole.
I suppose thats a fair thought process when the number one golfer in the world (Jon Rahm) is only a few shots back.....
Top 5 at Mexico Open
Tony got the win, but there was a lot of good golf played this weekend. Of course, Jon Rahm continues his hot streak and stayed in contention after carding a 61 on day three. He adds to his Fed Ex cup points this week and extends his lead as world #1.
Aside from Rahm doing Rahm things......there were a few other players on the list that notched a top 5 finish and seem to be trending on an upward trajectory.
Akshay Bhatia - The young 21 year old has been great at every level, but the PGA Tour is different. Bhatia has shown he belongs and looks like he is going to be a super star sooner rather than later. He didn't have his best stuff on sunday, but this kid can really play and it's just a matter of time before he gets his first win out here in the big show.
Brandon Wu - Wu is another great player coming out of Standford. He played solid golf all week long and he looked like he was going to make a run at Tony early on Sunday. Unfortunately, he stumbled a bit in the middle of the round and Tony made some clutch par saves, but we wouldn't be suprised if Wu gets his first win in the 2023 season.
Overall, the young guys got some good experience this weekend at the Mexico Open and you can't teach experience. You have to put yourself in those positions on Sunday to know what it's like to play with the big boys. Let's see if one of these guys can keep the momentum going and get thier first PGA Tour win this season.
While they are out here chasing Millions of dollars, we will be out at the local muni just trying to stay Under Bogey!
